We drive north to Cumbria for our 4-night stay.
We visit the pretty market town of Hexham, with its 7th century Abbey Church, before continuing to the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall. We include a guided tour of Chester's Roman Fort, the finest example of a Roman Cavalry Fort in Britain. We continue along the route of the Military Road to enjoy the spectacular and scenic locations of this great frontier and to view the wall at close quarters at one of the viewing locations.
This morning we drive to Carlisle where we enjoy a train ride along the scenic Cumbrian coastline through Maryport and Whitehaven, where the stunning sea views stay with us all the way to Ravenglass. Here we join the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway - L'al Ratty steam train from the coast to the foothills of England's highest mountains.
A morning visit to Hutton-in-the Forest, a beautiful house, set in woods which were once part of a medieval forest. The house consists of a 14th century pele tower and contains a fine collection of furniture, portraits, tapestries and china. The superb walled garden has a large collection of herbaceous plants, and there are a fine array of terraces and topiary sculptures. We return via Lanercost Priory - Set in a tranquil setting the Priory had an often-troubled history yet there is much to see in this best preserved Cumbrian monastery. Afternoon tea is included in the adjacent tea rooms.
After breakfast we commence our journey homeward.
