In Spring it’s a gateway for thousands of migratory birds visiting the UK. From our hotel there are stunning panoramic views over Chesil Beach, Lyme Bay and Portland Harbour – an ideal base for exploring the wildlife of Dorset!
Our Wildlife Expert – Ashley Grove Once again we are pleased to team up with the expert skills of guide Ashley Grove, who will help you get so much more from the rich wildlife locations we will visit. Warwickshire born Ashley has formed a career from a combination of his expert knowledge of Birds in particular and his warm approachable personality.

Friday
We visit the Portland Bird Observatory and Field Centre, a haven of interest for naturalists all year round. Later, we continue to Radipole Lake RSPB. Nestling in the centre of Weymouth it is home to some stunning wildlife, including fabulous birds like bearded tits and kingfishers and elusive creatures such as otters and water voles. Flocks of swallows and martins gather over the water in spring to feed on insects after their migration from Africa. Warblers also arrive, including grasshopper, willow and Cetti's warblers, blackcaps, whitethroats and lesser whitethroats. The reedbeds are full of singing sedge and reed warblers. You may be lucky enough to hear the boom of a bittern coming from the reedbed.
Saturday
The RSPB nature reserve in Arne is a nature lover and bird watching paradise. The reserve is a vast expanse of heath and woodland bordering on Poole Harbour. The area is famed for the diverse birdlife. Twitchers are well catered for with hides scattered all over the area in opportunistic locations. The Arne peninsular is popular in all of the seasons due to unique visitors and prolific mating seasons.
Note:
On all Tours we will spend time outdoors regardless of the weather. Please bring sensible clothing and wear strong shoes or boots, as it can be wet and muddy. Our Active Traveller Holidays itineraries often include walks which may be up to 1 - 1.5 miles long over uneven ground which may prove challenging for those customers with reduced and limited mobility.

Set on the summit of Portland with stunning sea and coastal views over Weymouth and Chesil beach towards Lyme Bay. Bar, Bistro & Coffee Shop with wonderful panoramic views.
Mobility Grade: 3 – The hotel commands an elevated position. Bar & Bistro is situated on the first floor accessible via a lift or 2 small flights of stairs. All bedrooms are situated on ground and first floor only. First floor rooms are not easily accessible via the lift so anyone with walking difficulties should request a ground floor room.
