We travel north to our hotel for our 4-night stay.
We visit 'Locomotion' in Shildon, a branch of the National Railway Museum, which contains many historic and interesting exhibits, locomotives and more. Later we continue to Durham City, home to the iconic Durham Cathedral and Castle World Heritage Site. We include a guided tour of the Cathedral before allowing free time to explore Durham's ancient cobbled streets.
We visit Hartlepool's award-winning Historic Quay - A faithful reproduction of an 18th century seaport portraying the exciting experience of what life was like at the time of Nelson and Trafalgar. Home to the Trincomalee - Europe's oldest floating warship, restored by the people of Hartlepool - this superb visitor attraction offers the sights, smells and sounds of the naval yesteryear.
A drive into the North Pennines takes us to Barnard Castle where we visit the Bowes Museum - an important collection of treasures including fine art, ceramics, textiles and dress. Our return takes us via Weardale where we pause in the pretty village of Stanhope with its Durham Dales Visitor Centre and Castle Gardens with tea rooms and craft workshops.
A leisurely drive homeward arriving home during the afternoon.
