We travel north, arriving in Hexham in the afternoon for our four night stay.
A morning excursion to the magnificent gardens at Belsay Hall (EH), a magical 17th-century mansion where we enjoy a guided tour. The Grade I listed heritage garden has been lovingly restored with an impressive array of shrubs and flowers which change with the seasons. We return to Hexham for free time during the afternoon.
We visit Alnwick Castle & Gardens - This majestic and imposing medieval castle offers impressive architecture, fine art treasures and a beautiful setting. It has been a popular film location, for everything from Harry Potter to Elizabeth to Becket to Blackadder. The garden has a Grand Cascade of amazing water displays, a rose garden with pergola-covered paths and a fine show of shrubs.
Today we visit Cragside House and Gardens (NT). The estate was created by Lord Armstrong, a Victorian inventor and landscape genius. It was the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity, and is still full of working ingenious gadgets. Cragside is home to one of the largest rock gardens in Europe that lead down to the Iron Bridge which in turn leads to the formal gardens.
A leisurely morning in Hexham for some last minute shopping and sightseeing before returning south, arriving home during the evening.
