Sunday

We drive north, pausing for a suitable stop for lunch en-route, arriving at our hotel for our 4-night stay.

Monday

Today we visit Cragside House and Gardens (NT). The estate was created by Lord Armstrong, a Victorian inventor and landscape genius. It was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity and is still full of working ingenious gadgets. Cragside is home to one of the largest rock gardens in Europe that lead down to the Iron Bridge which in turn leads to the formal gardens. Next, we enjoy a scenic drive to Kielder Water and Forest Park Visitors Centre, where there is time to enjoy the wild landscape at Europe’s largest man-made reservoir.

Tuesday

This morning we drive north to the border town of Berwick-on Tweed. Set on the beautiful and unspoiled Northumberland coast at the mouth of the River Tweed, Berwick is England’s most northerly town. Famous for its Elizabethan Walls, three iconic bridges and picturesque Georgian buildings, Berwick is packed with tradition and quirky charm. We visit Berwick Barracks – built in the early 18th century they were amongst the first in England to be purpose built. The ‘By Beat of Drum’ exhibition gives you an insight into the life of the British infantryman from the Civil War to the First World War, it also boasts a range of other temporary and permanent exhibitions to explore: Close-by there is the King’s Own Scottish Borderers Museum and the Berwick Museum and Art Gallery all waiting to be explored. In the afternoon we return via Bamburgh with its imposing castle, with glorious coastal views out to the Farne Islands.

Wednesday

A morning excursion to the magnificent gardens at Belsay Hall (EH), a magical 17th-century mansion where we enjoy a guided tour. The Grade I listed heritage garden has been lovingly restored with an impressive array of shrubs and flowers which change with the seasons. We return to Morpeth for free time. Why not visit the 13th century Chantry, home to an extensive collection of traditional, and contemporary Northumbrian arts and crafts. Nearby you can also discover the renowned Bagpipe Museum, which holds an internationally recognised collection of pipes.

Thursday

Departing after breakfast we make a suitable lunch stop en-route before arriving home during the early evening.
