Discover everyday objects from centuries past, including Victorian toilets and baths, kitchen and laundry equipment, model trains, dolls, toys and period costumes. The folly castle here was immortalised in Jane Austen's 'Northanger Abbey' and was described as 'the finest place in England'. From here it is a short drive to our hotel and our 4-night stay.
After breakfast we visit Bath. Jane Austen knew Bath as a thriving spa resort popular with fashionable society. We commence with a visit to the Jane Austen Centre in Gay Street - A small museum dedicated to celebrating the life of Bath's most famous resident. After our visit we are free to explore Bath at leisure. To allow you to see more of this splendid Georgian City we include tickets for the Open Top 'Hop-on, Hop-Off' bus tour.
This morning we make the short journey into Bristol where we collect our guide and enjoy a tour of this historic maritime city. Later, we visit Brunel's SS Great Britain, the world's first great ocean liner. Dating from 1843 we can discover what life was like for Victorian passengers and crew.
Today we travel to the picturesque Wiltshire village of Lacock, well known for its Abbey. From here, we continue to Bowood House and Gardens, the magnificent home to the Marquis of Lansdowne. Set in glorious Capability Brown parkland, with terraced gardens and sloping lawns leading to the 40-acre lake beyond
