We travel outward via the historic City of York. With free time to discover one of our favourite tourist cities, you'll need to be selective, with the majestic Minster, the old Roman walls, the Shambles, the Jorvik Centre and the National Railway Museum all well worth considering.
This morning we begin with a drive across the moors to the village of Danby, visiting the Danby Moors Centre, set in an idyllic spot on the banks of the River Esk. Here we include morning tea/coffee and scones. We continue over Blakey Ridge to the lovely village of Hutton-le-Hole where we visit the Ryedale Folk Museum. We continue to Pickering where we join the North Yorkshire Moors Railway for an 18 miles steam train journey across the moors to Grosmont.
Today we head for the seaside! We head to Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
We take the Cliff Lift to the shore and enjoy a gentle stroll along the historic pier. We continue along the coastal route to maritime Whitby, where we have free time to wander the little alleyways and narrow streets.
We commence with a drive through Bilsdale - 'Little Switzerland', passing Rievaulx Abbey to delightful Helmsley, with its huge market square and little tea rooms. Here we take a break for lunch and later continue past Ampleforth and Byland Abbey to Kilburn, where you will see the famous White Horse on the hillside before returning to our hotel.
After breakfast we commence our journey homeward. After a suitable stop for lunch en-route we arrive home in the late afternoon.
