The Scottish Borders is our destination today. First, we visit Melrose with its ruined 12th century Abbey, the resting place of Robert the Bruce's Heart. We continue via Scott's View, overlooking the Tweed Valley where there is an opportunity to visit the statue of the great Scottish patriot, William Wallace, before reaching the impressive Floors Castle, home to the Duke of Roxburgh - Scotland's largest inhabited castle and full of works of art and fine antiques.
After breakfast we travel to Edinburgh by coach. After a short-guided tour by coach we are free to explore the historic centre and take advantage of the ample shopping opportunities.
We return back to the Scottish borders on the newly reopened Borders railway from Edinburgh Waverley Station to Tweedbank, the longest stretch of newly reopened domestic railway for more than a century, travelling through fabulous countryside that has been untouched for almost half a century. Your coach will meet you and transfer you back to your hotel.
Today, we drive to Traquair House the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland, which is over 900 years old and was a pleasure ground for Scottish Kings and a refuge for Catholic priests. Later, we continue to Abbotsford House, built and lived in by the 19th century novelist Sir Walter Scott - Stunningly located by the banks of the River Tweed in the heart of a landscape that inspired the poetry and novels of its creator.
We leave after breakfast and begin the journey home.
