We travel north to Cumbria, where we enjoy a guided tour of the Dalemain Historic House and Gardens. This haven of tranquillity boasts a fine mix of Medieval Tudor & early Georgian architecture and over five acres of richly planted borders with intriguing and unusual combinations of flowers and shrubs. From here we continue to our hotel for our four-night stay.
First stop today is Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum in Grasmere. Dove Cottage was home to the romantic poet William Wordsworth and where he wrote many of his famous poems. Time at leisure in Grasmere, before continuing on to Rydal Mount and gardens in the afternoon. The Wordsworth family moved into Rydal Mount in 1813 and rented the house continually for a further 46 years. The garden contains a wide variety of rare shrubs and trees and has wonderful views towards both Lake Windermere and Rydal Water.
A free day to relax and explore Keswick.
We visit England's "most beautiful lake", Ullswater, for a cruise on a 'steamer' from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding. From here, enjoy the beautiful and remote scenery of the Lake District as we drive over Kirkstone Pass, returning to Keswick in the afternoon.
Departing Keswick we drive along the shoreline of Thirlmere, in the lea of mighty Helvellyn pausing at Bowness-on-Windermere before continuing our journey homeward.
