Enjoy a scenic drive through the picturesque Ribble Valley towards Gawthorpe Hall, affectionately known as the 'Downton of the North'. This Elizabethan gem hosts an extraordinary textile collection, showcasing intricate needlework, lace and costume in addition to contemporary pieces. The Long Gallery is home to portraits of society figures from the 17th century, some of these are on loan from the National Portrait Gallery in London
We travel to Rawtenstall where we step back in time for a nostalgic trip on a steam train along the East Lancashire Railway. Our journey takes us through the beautiful Lancashire countryside to the market town of Bury. Entrance to the Transport Museum is included with free time to explore the famous Bury Market. After lunch we continue to the Fred Dibnah Heritage Centre. The museum tells the story of this well-known engineer, steeplejack and English eccentric. (Light refreshments included. Visitors should note that the site retraces our industrial heritage and contains heavy machinery so sensible footwear is recommended).
Our first stop this morning is a short ride from our hotel to The Chocolate House in Blackburn. We enjoy a chocolate making demonstration, along with a cup of tea or coffee and some samples of chocolate to tantalise your taste buds. In the afternoon we visit historic Samlesbury Hall, a fabulous half-timbered black and white medieval house built in 1325 as a family home. We include a guided tour which brings the history to life and tells tales of intrigue and witchcraft through the centuries.
Leaving our hotel this morning we return home.
