Borderlands & The Vale of Llangollen

Borderlands & The Vale of Llangollen

Imagine drifting along the beautiful clear waters of the Llangollen Canal, now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, when the only sound you can hear are the birds in the overhanging trees and the gentle plodding of horse's hooves on the waterside pathway as it pulls your boat through the Welsh mountains.

Departing during the morning we travel outward via the British Ironwork Centre at Oswestry before arriving at our hotel in the Vale of Llangollen during the afternoon.

After breakfast we enjoy a return heritage train ride on the Llangollen Railway. Primarily steam hauled, our journey takes us through 7 ½ miles of scenic countryside as we follow the River Dee to the village of Carrog. Here, we can enjoy spectacular views over the River Dee and the Berwyn mountain range.

Travelling via Horseshoe Pass we visit Plas Newydd, former home of the 'Ladies of Llangollen'. This house is a gothic fantasy with beautiful stained-glass panels and elaborate carved oak furniture. In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing horse-drawn boat trip to see the Chain Bridge across the River Dee and view the manmade Horseshoe Falls.

Today we travel to the mighty medieval fortress of Chirk Castle (NT). Here, we discover 400 years of changing tastes and fashions in its lavishly furnished rooms. Built on an outcrop above the meeting point of the River Dee and Ceiriog, this imposing castle was an ominous statement of English intent in the Welsh Marches. After exploring the castle there's time to wander through over 5-acres of stunning gardens with glorious views out over the Cheshire and Salop plains.

Leaving our hotel after breakfast we commence our journey homeward.
