Glyn Jones, Head of Gardens of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and one of the UKs top Garden Managers who will accompany the tour throughout. His knowledgeable, professional and humorous approach will be a huge bonus as we visit many of the regions major garden attractions.
Glyn has been working in horticulture professionally for 40 years, having been through a traditional style apprenticeship scheme, then finishing his Horticultural education at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
Throughout his career, Glyn has been Gardener in Charge at Tintinhull House in Somerset working alongside Penelope Hobhouse the Garden designer and writer. The next challenge was Peckover House in Cambridgeshire, working as Head Gardener and Property Manager. In 1999 Glyn took over the reins at Hidcote Manor Garden in Gloucestershire, one of the National Trusts flagship gardens. Glyn spent 17 years there, restoring missing features, improving the standards of Horticulture, and establishing environmental standards. He also initiated volunteering opportunities and establishing a garden apprenticeship scheme. Glyn joined the Shakespeare Birthplace trust as Head of Gardens in February 2016.
We travel south pausing at Knightshayes. Knightshayes has one of the finest gardens in Devon, with formal terraces, unique topiary, rare shrubs, many fine specimen trees and glorious spring flowers. After a Garden visit and free time for lunch we continue to our hotel for our 4-night stay.
Today we visit two gardens that are located next to each other but are, individually, very different. Trebah Gardens is a spectacular 26 acre Cornish ravine garden, rated among the 80 finest gardens in the world. This sub-tropical paradise is home to a unique collection of rare and exotic plants, trees and shrubs. Next door, we visit Glendurgan (NT) with its wonderful collection of sub-tropical plants, pathways and a maze that dates back over 180 years.
This morning we make our way to one of the most unique and fascinating attractions in Cornwall - The Lost Gardens of Heligan. A genuine secret garden, lost for decades. Now, with an incredible 200 acres of gardens and estate to explore we enjoy a guided tour. Relax in the afternoon in the quintessential Cornish fishing village of Mevagissey and discover its quaint streets lined with fisherman's cottages, pubs, cafes, galleries and shops.
Today we visit St Michael's Mount, one of Britain's most stunning coastal locations. This small island is cut off from the mainland, so depending upon the tides we'll either access the island via the cobbled causeway walk or by one of the flotilla of small boats that sail from the mainland at high tide .The gardens cling to a near-vertical granite rock face above the sea. However, the warm Gulf Stream along with the heat-retentive granite walls and bedrock, enable a wide variety of tender and exotic plants to be grown. We continue to Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, a beautiful landscaped garden in a sheltered valley overlooking Mount's Bay, interwoven with high quality contemporary art installations. (NB: Both attractions today are not suitable for those with reduced mobility)
Departing St Austell we visit Lanhydrock House, an impressive late Victorian home and gardens. We include morning coffee before commencing our return to the Midlands.
This tour will include walks over uneven ground which may prove challenging for those customers with reduced and limited mobility.
The hotel is set in 300 acres of grounds overlooking St Austell Bay and has truly inspiring views.
