Tuesday
This morning we step back to the 1770's and visit the National Trust's Wordsworth House and Garden (NT) in the Cumbrian town of Cockermouth. It is preserved as it would have been when he and his sister lived here with their parents in the 18th century. We continue south following the scenic Cumbrian coastline to Ravenglass. Here we join the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway - for a L'al Ratty steam train from the coast to the foothills of England's highest mountains.
Wednesday
We cross the border in to Scotland and visit the Devil's Porridge Museum - a state-of-the-art museum that has something for everyone. Experience life in a World War One trench and explore the factory to discover what life was like for the thousands of munitions girls who flocked to work in this ammunitions factory. The unique name of the museum is inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who while visiting the factory as a war correspondent witnessed the munitions girls mixing the nitro cotton by hand and commented 'that is the devil's porridge'! We continue to nearby Caerlaverock Castle where we discover one of Scotland's great medieval fortresses with its moat, twin-towered gatehouse and imposing battlements.
Thursday
Today's excursion is to the North Lakes of Ullswater and Derwentwater. Catch a glimpse of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike and free time in the market town of Keswick, before we enjoy an afternoon cruise on Lake Ullswater from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge.
