We drive north to Cumbria for our 4-night stay.

This morning takes us to Hexham, a historic market town, where today is also market day. Here, you can search for a bargain, wander the town or possibly visit the historical Abbey. In the afternoon, we travel through the Pennines to KIllhope - The North-East Lead Mining Museum. Here you can experience the life and work of the lead mining families of the North Pennines.

This morning is all about scenery, as we follow Hadrian's Wall, passing the famous 'Sycamore Gap' as we continue along the wall to Chollerford. We then drive through the countryside, around the scenic Derwent Reservoir to Slaley Hall, where we enjoy cream tea in the beautiful former Edwardian Mansion. In the afternoon, we travel to the historic village of Corbridge. As far back as 1827 Corbridge was rated as a shopper's paradise, a reputation it retains today. A wander along Corbridge's pretty high street with its plethora of small shops with their decorated fronts will tempt you.

This morning we travel to the border city of Carlisle, where we include a guided visit to Carlisle Castle (EH) - a major fortress that has withstood many sieges, facing more than any other castle in Britain. The castle played a key role in the conflict between England and Scotland. The Castle is also home to the museum of Cumbria's Military Life. In the afternoon we journey via Penrith and the spectacular Hartside Pass to Alston, where we enjoy a ride on the South Tynedale Railway, Britain's highest narrow-gauge railway line.

After breakfast we commence our journey homeward.
