The Isle of Arran & The Kintyre Peninsula

The Isle of Arran & The Kintyre Peninsula

With a remarkable diversity of landscapes, clear green seas, sandy beaches, mountains and lochs it's little wonder Arran is referred to as "Scotland in Miniature". With the influence of the Gulf Stream the climate is mild, a place where you can see palm trees around its 56 miles of coastline. Further afield we also visit Kintyre and the Crinan Canal - one of the most beautiful waterways in Britain, and enjoy uninterrupted views of Scotland's breathtaking and rugged natural landscape.

Monday

We drive north, boarding the afternoon ferry from Ardrossan to Arran. Check into the Kinloch Hotel for our 4-night stay.

Tuesday

Today we explore Arran and its coastal villages, travelling northwards along the coast for a guided tour and tastings at the Arran Distillery. Time free in Brodick, the island's capital before we continue south via Whitling Bay and Lamlash. Cameras ready as we pause at the impressive "Paddy's Milestone" at Kildonan before continuing along the coast to Blackwaterfoot.

Wednesday

Hugging the western coastline we head to Lochranza for the ferry sailing over the Mull of Kintyre. We journey along the shoreline of Loch Fyne for a soup/sandwich lunch at the Grey Gull hotel in Ardrishaig. Later, we visit the Crinan Canal - a marvellous feat of engineering that links Loch Fyne at Ardrishaig with the open sea at Crinan, some 9 miles away. There are 15 lock gates and over 2000 vessels use the canal each year.

Thursday

After a leisurely morning we visit Brodick Castle & Gardens, beautifully positioned overlooking the Firth of Clyde. The castle is packed full of treasures, period furniture, paintings and silverware. The landscapes gardens, dating back to 1710, include water features, wildlife ponds, a fine collection of rhododendrons, Bavarian Summer House, walled garden and woodland walks.

Friday

After breakfast we commence our journey south. After a stop for lunch we arrive home in the evening.
