Clevedon & Secrets of Somerset

Monday

We take a leisurely drive to the West Country, making a stop en-route to visit SS Great Britain, the worlds first great ocean liner, which is based at Bristol. In the afternoon we continue the short drive to our hotel in Clevedon, our base for the next 4- nights.

Tuesday

After breakfast we spend time to explore Clevedon before visiting the great seaside resort of Weston-Super-Mare. Here we find all the traditional seaside attractions, including the famous beach donkeys! The wide sweep of Weston Bay has miles of clean sandy beach and a level promenade boasting superb views over the Bristol Channel.

Wednesday

We visit spectacular Cheddar Gorge, a place of wild and rugged beauty. Admission is included to Gough's Cave (Please wear sensible footwear & be fairly steady on your legs). We continue to Wells, Englands smallest city. Wander the medieval streets and look at the 800-year-old Cathedral and Bishops Palace.

Thursday

Travel to Bishops Lydeard for scenic train ride on the West Somerset Railway. Our 23-mile journey takes us through the heart of the scenic Quantock Hills passing unspoilt villages and farms nestling in leafy lanes. Upon arrival at Minehead, we meet up again with our coach and continue to lovely Dunster, which has an imposing castle.

Friday

Departing Clevedon we visit Tyntesfield (NT) a fine Victorian country house. Spiralling turrets and pinnacles adorn the roof; ornate stone carvings and church like windows complete the gothic look, giving the feeling of a mysterious fairytale mansion. Terraced lawns give way o spacious parkland filled with hundreds of trees and a walled garden beyond. We return home during the afternoon.
