Tuesday
Today we follow the path of Hadrian’s Wall, which stretch some 76 miles from The Tyne to the Solway. We take a short break at The Sill Landscape Discovery Centre before continuing to Hexham. Here we have time for lunch and chance to explore before we return by train to Carlisle along the Tyne Valley.
Wednesday
We have a free day in the historic border city of Carlisle. The city has lots to offer, Carlisle Cathedral, Carlisle Castle, museums and an excellent pedestrianised centre.
Thursday
This morning we travel into the Yorkshire Dales via Kirkby Lonsdale, passing Ribblehead Viaduct, to the town of Settle. In the afternoon we take in the most spectacular train journey on a main line railway in the whole of England - the famous Settle to Carlisle line. Towering viaducts, bridges, long deep tunnels, lovingly kept station gardens all help to make this one of the best loved lines in the country. We travel along the whole line to Carlisle.
