Monday
Travelling north we visit Samlesbury Hall, a fabulous half-timbered black and white medieval house built in 1325. A guided tour takes us around and brings its history to life. From here it is a short drive to our hotel located in the Lancashire Fells for our 4-night stay.
Tuesday
This morning we visit Clitheroe Castle Museum, which stands high on Castle Hill and has dominated Clitheroe’s skyline for over 800 years. It tells the story of Clitheroe and its surrounding area: the formation of the land 350 million years ago. We continue to Gawthorpe Hall (NT), affectionately known as ‘Downton of the North’. The Hall was redesigned in the 1850’s by Sir Charles Barry, designer of the Houses of Parliament and the real ‘Downton’ – Highclere Castle and is a fine example of Elizabethan architecture where we discover its rooms filled with Victorian Gothic furnishings and decoration.
Wednesday
The interior décor and flower arrangements at the Gibbon Bridge are always a major talking point and today, after breakfast, we have a talk and flower arranging demonstration. After included morning coffee we then meet the Head Gardener for a tour of the hotel’s magnificent gardens. Following an included light lunch, we enjoy an afternoon visit to Browsholme Hall, the ancestral home of the Parkers, Bowbearers of the Forest of Bowland since Tudor times. Enjoy the Hall’s magnificent architecture, fabulous interiors and antique furnishings - the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Forest of Bowland and a real hidden gem.
Thursday
We commence our day with a visit to Dewlay Cheesemakers, recognised for producing the very finest quality Lancashire Cheese. Enjoy tasting before continuing north to Lancaster where we sit back and take our seats for a cruise along the Lancaster Canal, travelling through the historic city before arriving at the spectacular Lune Aqueduct where we enjoy spectacular views. Included in our 1 ¾ hour cruise is a lovely fish & chip lunch.
Friday
Our homeward journey includes a visit to the fashionable seaside resort of Southport, before returning home during the evening.
