Tuesday
A free day to discover the varied attractions of Whitby where there is time to explore the narrow streets, perhaps buy some Whitby jet - the ‘black amber of the north’ and have ‘proper’ fish & chips for lunch. For the more active, you can climb the famous steps up to the ruins of Whitby Abbey - the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ which stands guard, high above the town.
Wednesday
Today’s excursion takes us deep into the North Yorkshire Moors. First we visit the charming market town of Helmsley before we reach Rievaulx Abbey - set in a tranquil valley we include a guided tour of the impressive ruins of what was once one of England’s most powerful Cistercian monasteries and see medieval artefacts in the modern museum. Enjoy the glorious views as we descend Sutton Bank to Thirsk, where we include a visit to the ‘World of James Herriot’ - The former home that features the life and work of ‘Alf Wright’ - the legendary local vet whose books, written under the name ‘James Herriot’ thrilled millions all over the world and spawned the popular TV series ‘All Creatures Great & Small’.
Thursday
This morning we head for the charming resort of Scarborough. Enjoy the delightful promenade in the attractive Belvedere Gardens, take a short walk across the Spa footbridge to the town centre and shops or take the cliff lift down to the golden beaches of the South Bay and busy little harbour.
Friday
After breakfast we depart for home.
