White Cliffs Country - Dover Castle & Canterbury

Monday

Departing Henley we journey south to Kent. Pausing for a suitable lunch stop en-route, we arrive at the Best Western Plus Burlington Hotel in Folkestone during the afternoon. Welcome drink upon arrival then relax into our rooms before our 3-course/3-choice dinner.

Tuesday

Today, we visit Dover Castle, the largest castle in England and one of its most significant as a fortress of defence throughout history. There is so much to see and do here, with one of the highlights being the underground tunnels from which Operation Dynamo (The Dunkirk Evacuation) was organised during the Second World War.

Wednesday

This morning we visit Canterbury where we enjoy a guided tour around Canterbury Cathedral. The guides are experts at making the Cathedral's rich history come to life, and you'll get some fantastic view of the amazing stained glass and wonder at the craftmanship that dates back to the days of the murder of Thomas Becket. Later, you'll get the chance to explore the beautiful streets of medieval Canterbury, which are full to the brim with historical significance.

Thursday

Departing our hotel after breakfast we visit Leeds Castle. Surrounded by its impressive moat and over 500 acres of parkland and gardens, there is a lot of fascinating history to discover here. It has been a Norman stronghold and the property of six of England's medieval queens, it was home to Henry VIII and his first wife and has become one of the most visited buildings in Britain. We commence our homeward journey after lunch, returning home in the early evening.
