Brand new for 2018, will be a collection of trips, which we know will suit many of our regular travellers. While changing nothing in terms of the quality of service, accommodation and food you have come to expect from Johnsons, we will be adding the expert skills of guide Ashley Grove, who will help you get so much more from the rich wildlife locations we will visit.
Warwickshire born Ashley has formed a career from a combination of his expert knowledge of Birds in particular and his warm approachable personality. He leads Birdwatching and Wildlife Photography tours not only in the UK, but further afield in Europe, Africa, Canada and the Caribbean.
Where facilities allow, these breaks will include an evening talk by Ashley, who is a recommended speaker by the RSPB and Royal Horticultural Society. Each of Ashleys informative talks are illustrated with images from his stunning wildlife portfolio and punctuated with entertaining anecdotes of his experiences in the field.
We are excited to welcome Ashley to the team and be able to offer these trips to what we already offer and we look forward to developing this programme further in the coming years.
The Isles of Scilly will be our location for Octobers adventure, where we could encounter some rarer birds. We visit during the autumn migration and with the location of these islands being renowned as a hotspot for the arrival of birds from far eastern Europe or even America at this time, who knows what we might see.
The Scillies are the most isolated and possibly the most beautiful islands in Britain, located 30 miles off the South West mainland. They comprise 150 islands which together make up one of the worlds biggest archipelagos.
A visit to the Isles of Scilly at this time of the year always has an extra edge to it if you are a birdwatcher! Birds are on the move from their breeding grounds heading to over-winter in milder climates and due to its location, the Scillys can be a landing ground for birds from America to Siberia and anywhere in between. Weather conditions depict what might drop in, but there is always plenty to see with Black Redstart, Firecrest, Purple Sandpiper, Lapland Bunting, Hoopoe and Rose Coloured Starling being regular migrants. Should the weather deliver from the west, birds like American Robin and the Black & White Warbler are all possible. There is an active grapevine on the islands, with new birds being reported regularly as they are found and evenings have a log call of the days bird sightings, which is a fun social gathering of birding tales and adventures.
