A morning at leisure in Konigswinter. At 1.00pm we board a KD River Cruise for a leisurely return sailing to Bonn. Upon arrival, our coach will transfer us the short distance into the town centre for free time and sightseeing.
We enjoy a nostalgic ride on the Vulkan Express, a privately owned narrow-gauge train. Our journey, through one of the most scenic valleys of the Rhine, passes castles and crosses viaducts as we ascend to the Eifel Mountains to the village of Engeln. We continue by road to Koblenz, famous as the meeting point 'German Corner' of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. Its fortress walls and castle towers, palaces and patrician houses are vivid illustrations of a turbulent past.
This morning we take a trip on the nearby Drachenfels Cog Railway. The railway leads from the bottom of the valley, up steep inclines and a height difference of 722 feet (220 metres), to the Drachenfels (Dragon Rock) hill. We take a wonderful return journey to the top, where an imposing ruined castle of the same name oversees the town and river. Free time in Konigswinter in the afternoon.
Take the high road over the Hunsrück hills to the ancient Moselle town of Cochem, dominated by its castle. You'll have time to explore the many medieval squares and picturesque cobbled streets full of speciality shops and cafes.
This morning we gently cruise along the Rhine to Linz, where we have time to explore this medieval town. Here you can explore the city's Old Town district and mighty castle before rejoining our coach for the short drive to the Karl-Heinz Broel winery in Rhondorf for tasting before returning to our hotel.
Leaving our hotel we make our way back to Calais and our ferry to Dover and home.
