Northumbria is a wonderful area with incredible landmarks and beautiful landscapes. It has had an adventurous history and is famous for many things including the famous author Catherine Cookson, who grew up in South Shields and based many of her famous novels in and around the area.

Sunday
We travel north towards Newcastle passing Antony Gormley's iconic Angel of the North as it welcomes travellers to the area, arriving at the hotel during the afternoon.
Monday
Today we travel into South Tyneside for a fascinating coach guided-tour of the area made famous by Catherine Cookson. The tour will pass the site of Cookson's birthplace, former homes and places of work and worship. We finish at South Shields Museum, which features exhibits about Catherine Cookson's life. After lunch, we cross the Tyne to visit Tynemouth village, gloriously located on a headland with fine views of the ruins of Tynemouth Castle, Priory and a wonderful memorial to Admiral Lord Collingwood the hero of Trafalgar.
Tuesday
We visit Alnwick Castle and Gardens - This majestic and imposing medieval castle offers impressive architecture, fine art treasures and a beautiful setting. It has been a popular film location, for everything from Harry Potter to Elizabeth to Becket to Blackadder. The garden has a Grand Cascade of amazing water displays, a rose garden with pergola-covered paths and a fine show of shrubs.
Wednesday
Today we join our boat for a fabulous cruise on the River Tyne - With expert commentary, we sail under many of the famous Tyne Bridges. In the afternoon we explore Gateshead Quays, including a guided tour of the Baltic Centre with its five floors of modern art and magnificent views of the Tyne.
Thursday
We commence our journey back to the Midlands arriving home during the early evening.
