Cruising leisurely to Spain we arrive in Santander around 12.15pm and continue to Leon for dinner and an overnight stay. After dinner there will be an opportunity to relax or to explore the historic city with its architectural treasures including the Cathedral, the Basilica of San Isidoro and the Hospital of San Marcos (now the Parador de Turismo).
The Pilgrims Route to Santiago de Compostela is renowned as a path of significant World historic and religious heritage. Along the route there are a succession of beautiful towns and villages and history can be found around every corner. We travel through Astorga, a medieval walled town with well-preserved architecture and a network of narrow and historic streets, located at the crossing point of the Pilgrims Route and the Silver Route. From here continue on the faster route via Lugo and Betanzos to arrive in Santiago de Compostela, for our 2 night stay.
Santiago is Capital of the region of Galicia. Millions of people come each year, from all over the World, to visit this city, which lies at the end of the Saint James pilgrimage route. Its historic centre has been designated a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO and the Cathedral is of specific interest. So too are the narrow and attractive streets of the old town which are filled with pretty shops, cafés and countless restaurants. We include a morning guided sightseeing tour including a visit to the Cathedral followed by an afternoon at leisure
Depart Santiago and enjoy some time exploring the Rias Baixas. From Pontevedra we travel through a succession of pretty villages following the route through Combarro, Sanxenxo, Portonovo and Cambadas. In the afternoon we continue south, into Portugal and on to Povoa de Varzim for a 3 night stay on the Atlantic Coast
A full day at leisure. Póvoa de Varzim is a cosmopolitan resort. The town is fortified by a small 18th century fort which guards the busy harbour. It has been an important fishing port for many years
A full day excursion to Porto, home of the Port wine trade. Porto is an unpolished yet charming city that is the historic home of the port wine trade. It is filled with narrow alleys, steep winding streets and historic buildings. We include a morning guided tour and include a visit to a Port Wine House and Museum in the famous Gaia area that overlooks the River Douro. The visit concludes with a tasting. The afternoon is free to explore the city.
IMPORTANT NOTE - Porto is a historic city. While prosperous it is unpolished and has a rugged charm - Many buildings initially appear shabby and it is often necessary to scratch below the surface to unearth the many architectural gems the city contains. It is built on a steep hill and lots of the streets and alleyways are narrow.
We depart Povoa and travel east, time allowing making a stop in the beautiful old UNESCO city of Guimaraes. This is a special place for the Portuguese people and it has a well preserved historic charm in the tight network of quiet streets in the pedestrian centre of the old town.
On then to Valladolid for dinner and an overnight stay.
We drive north, past Palencia and into the province of Cantabria, then onto Santander to board the 3.15pm afternoon cruise-ferry crossing back to the UK. We cruise through the night with lower 2 berth inside en-suite cabin accommodation provided. There are a choice of dinner options available with meals payable on board.
Arriving at Portsmouth approximately 2.15pm we rejoin our coach for the journey homeward
