Day One: Arrival

We travel to Dover for the Channel crossing to Calais, before continuing south to the Novotel Orléans for our overnight stay.

Day Two

Continuing southwards, we enter the Dordogne region and arrive at our hotel, the Hotel La Hoirie, where we stay for five nights.

Day Three

We spend today at leisure in the beautifully preserved medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda. One of the most alluring towns in south-west France, Sarlat is known for its honey-coloured stone buildings, winding lanes and rich heritage, with history centred around its former Benedictine abbey.

Day Four

After a leisurely breakfast, we drive the short distance to Beynac-et-Cazenac, one of the most picturesque villages on the Dordogne. Here we enjoy a one-hour circular cruise on the river aboard a traditional-style 'gabarre', inspired by the cargo boats once used on these waters. Afterwards, there is free time to explore the village at your own pace. In the afternoon, we continue to the Jardins du Manoir d'Eyrignac for a one-hour guided tour. These elegant gardens are a feast for the senses, with formal topiary, the beautiful White Garden, peaceful walkways and a wildflower meadow to enjoy at leisure after our tour.

Day Five

This morning we visit Lascaux IV, the International Centre for Cave Art, for a self-guided tour of its remarkable full-scale replica of the original cave. The world-famous prehistoric paintings, discovered in 1940 and dating back thousands of years, are brought vividly to life through faithful reproduction and modern interpretation. In the afternoon, our coach takes us towards Souillac and on to Martel, the starting point for our steam train ride on the Tourist Railway of Haut-Quercy. Departing at 14:30 hrs, this one-hour, eight-mile round trip climbs more than 80 metres and rewards us with fine panoramic views across the Dordogne Valley.

Day Six

We make a half-day visit to the dramatic cliffside village of Rocamadour, a celebrated pilgrimage site and one of the most memorable sights in the region. Its medieval stone houses, sanctuaries and winding lanes appear to cling to the rockface, creating a truly striking setting.

Day Seven

We return north today, breaking our journey with a two-night stay at the Novotel Fontainebleau.

Day Eight

Today we include entrance to the magnificent Château de Fontainebleau, one of France's great royal residences. Enjoy time to explore its richly decorated interiors and impressive courtyards, reflecting centuries of French history.

Day Nine

We make our return journey to Calais for the Channel crossing to Dover, before continuing home to Henley-in-Arden.

Hotel La Hoirie

This 3 star hotel is located within its own grounds, just outside the centre of Sarlat-la-Canéda. The hotel consists of 2 buildings. The main building is an authentic 13th century farming lodge, which houses the rustic-chic bar and restaurant, complete with a light and airy conservatory where breakfast and dinner are taken. The second building, which opened in 2018, is built in traditional stone with 26 state of the art bedrooms and the main hotel reception. There is a charming central courtyard – a lovely area in which to relax – leading to an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by lawns and shady trees – the perfect place to relax with a drink.
