Monday
Departing Henley, we journey to the northeast and to our hotel base for 4-nights – the popular 4-star rated
Copthorne Hotel, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Tuesday
Our local guide takes us on an all-encompassing tour of Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrating
its 1900th anniversary. Take in the iconic views of Hadrian's Wall where highlights include Heddon on the Wall – the best
remaining example of the 'Broad Wall' which stretches for several hundred yards. Corbridge – an attractive small market town
and Chesters Roman Fort – the best example of a Roman Cavalry Fort on the Wall. At Steel Rigg, we find one of the finest
viewpoints along the central section of Hadrian's Wall before reaching the busy market town of Hexham.
Wednesday
Two experiences in one today. Firstly, we visit Bamburgh Castle. Sitting proudly atop its basalt throne, Bamburgh
reigns supreme over the surrounding landscape. With stunning views out to the Farne Islands and north to Lindisfarne, you
can't fail to be impressed. The staterooms are filled with the finest porcelain, china, furniture and artworks. Bloodthirsty
weapons glint from the walls and cases, hinting at the turmoil and sieges that have taken place here. Next, we enjoy a Farne
Islands Experience Cruise – Here, you will feel as though you're David Attenborough as we embark on a nature and wildlife
cruise around the rocky Farne Islands. Trace the resident Atlantic Grey Seal colony,
seen on or around the islands or try your hand at seabird spotting looking out for
the seasonal visitors such as puffins, eider ducks, kittiwakes, fulmars, guillemots
and razorbills. (Please note: – this experience is dependent on weather conditions
as the boat can only sail in safe conditions)
Thursday
We commence with a visit to Locomotion, where you can see highlights
of the National Collection of railway vehicles at Shildon – the world’s first railway
town. Next we visit the Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle, where we open up the
pages of the greatest mid-19th century
love story as you join a museum
curator for a specialist talk at the
Bowes Museum – a hidden treasure, in
the very English countryside of Co.
Durham. Founded by the passionate
John & Joséphine Bowes and their
shared love of art, this world-class
museum today contains the greatest
collection of European fine &
decorative arts.
Friday
After breakfast we leave our
hotel and make our journey home
with comfort stops en-route.
