Thu 25 - Tue 30 June 2026: A Holiday to Rhine Valley with Johnsons Coaches
Book Now
Our base for exploring the Rhine region is the Maritim Hotel in the riverside town of Königswinter, set beneath the Siebengebirge hills. During our stay we visit Beethovens birthplace, beautiful Boppard, sample two very different scenic railways and cruise along the Loreley Valley, the famous Rhine Gorge, where steep vineyards are overlooked by castles at every turn. Thursday
To Dover for the ferry to Calais then across Belgium and into Germany, arriving at the Maritim Hotel in time for dinner and five nights.
Friday
Following breakfast we make the short journey to Bonn, where we have a self-guided tour of Beethoven Haus, the birthplace of the composer. Back in Königswinter for the afternoon, we take the Drachenfelsbahn, Germany's oldest rack railway. From bottom station to top is a height difference of 220 metres and at the summit you'll find the ruined Drachenfels castle, a visitor centre and great views over the Rhine.
Saturday
We'll give the driver the day off today, allowing you to relax in the hotel, enjoy a Rhine promenade or maybe take the train to Cologne.
Sunday
We hug the left bank of the Rhine today, visiting Boppard, a lovely riverside town backed by vineyards. A boat trip takes us along the prettiest and most famous stretch of the river, past protective castles at every turn, on our way to the legendary Loreley Rock.
Monday
Free time this morning in Koblenz, which stands proudly at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. Afterwards we join the Brohltalbahn railway (hopefully steam-hauled). Otherwise known as the Vulkan Express, the railway meanders up from Brohl into the Eiffel hills through dramatic rock formations created during a period of volcanic activity.
Tuesday
Leaving our hotel we make our way back to Calais and our ferry to Dover and home.
A hotel with great views of the River Rhine, it boasts bar, restaurant and Rhine Terrace. Leisure facilities include an indoor swimming pool, sauna and fitness centre. All rooms have wifi, smart TV, air-conditioning and hairdryer. The Maritim buffet breakfast is legendary in its choice and we have agreed a half-board arrangement that includes a soft drink, a beer or a glass of house wine with dinner every evening.
